Basic Income: Pitfalls and Opportunities
Please join us on March 26th as we welcome Liane Gale from Basic Income Guarantee Minnesota. The Basic Income Earth Network defines Basic Income as a “periodic cash payment unconditionally delivered to all on an individual basis, without means-test or work requirement”
Basic Income is not a new idea and because of societal pressures even made it into the U.S. Congress as a policy proposal about 50 years ago. Just in the past few years we have seen resurgence in the Basic Income debate globally. In 2018, the Finnish government experimented with basic income, and GiveDirectly, a U.S. non-profit, has recently established the world’s largest basic income experiment in Kenya.
This presentation will provide a background on the current Basic Income movement and major players nationally and globally, on current practical applications, such as pilot studies, and to discuss the potential, as well as drawbacks, of a Basic Income. It will also explore how a Basic Income could lead to different power structures and to system change.
Liane Gale is a scientist-turned-activist, who has been especially interested in politics and economics as a means to system change. She is a founding member of the local group BIGMN (Basic Income Guarantee Minnesota) and the international Basic Income Women Action Group and has been a member of the national and international Basic Income community over the past four years.

The Consequences of the Cash Bail System
Please join us as we welcome the MN Freedom Fund to Westside Progressives.
Did you know that the only two countries where someone has to put up cash to avoid being imprisoned before their trial are the United States and the Philippines?
Research suggests that those who are able to successfully post bail have lower rates of conviction, less severe sentences, and lower rates of recidivism than those who cannot. Those who are unable to post bail are at risk of losing their employment, their housing, and potentially custody of their children. The Minnesota Freedom Fund pays criminal bail and immigration bond for those who cannot afford to and works to end discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing.
Join us on January 22nd to learn more about the consequences a cash bail system creates and what the MN Freedom Fund is doing to push for change.
